Lee Valley Regional Park Authority Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers
Volunteers help tack up horses for Riding for the Disabled lessons at the Lee Valley Riding Centre
For infomation on each role click on the document for a role description.
 
Currently we are asking that all our volunteers are over 16 for health and safety and insurance reasons. However, young people under 16 wishing to volunteer can come along at any age and help out as long as they are accompanied by an adult.
Conservation and Environment

River Lee Country Park & North Rangers
These activities are run by the rangers and all tools and equipment are provided. A health and safety and tool talk is given before each session.
 
Any one can come along, but please check with the Ranger team first in case of any changes to the plan.  These are good sessions as introduction sessions, and they are also great ways of keeping fit and good gentle exercise for people who enjoy being outside. Current programs for River Lee Country Park is in the attachment below.
 
 
Lee Valley Regional Park South - Conservation Works
A programme of works has bee put together for sites in the south of the Lee Valley Park. Volunteers and people interested in gaining countryside management experience are welcome to come along and take part in these activities which will be supervised by rangers.

Biological Survey Volunteer
Surveying a variety of plants and wildlife at any of our sites to help support conservation management and to monitor management we are already undertaking.
You can work on your own or in pairs. Some training is given on different species each year and is open to all volunteers.
 
Practical Conservation Management Volunteer
Joining the current teams undertaking various conservation and environmental tasks. This is a great way of keeping fit if you enjoy being outside and working for nature.
 
Bittern Information Point Assistant
Working at our information point at Fishers Green to show members of the public how fascinating the birds that visit the site are. (Bittern in winter and Common Tern in summer).
If you like working with people, are interested in birds and like being outside this could be for you.
 
 

Gardening

Myddelton House Gardening Volunteer
This role is assisting with gardening duties at Myddelton House in Enfield which is a nationally important garden created by E A Bowles. Duties will include assisting regular staff with weeding, pruning, planting and general maintenance. The is also the opportunity to join the Bowls Society who are a group dedicated to the gardens and who also regularly volunteer in the gardens to help with the upkeep.
 

Youth and Schools

 
Lee Valley Youth and Schools Team
The Youth and Schools team have opportunities for volunteers to work with them on their education programme.
 
Crucial Crew
Help our Youth and Schools team to educate 10 and 11 year olds on Safety in the Countryside as part of their Crucial Crew
 

Fisheries 

  

Honorary Warden and Fisheries Bailiff
Working with the fisheries team undertaking duty at particular times to check tickets of anglers and patrolling waters. Recording fish catches and assisting with any problems when required.  Please note there is a currently a waiting list for this role.
 
Riding Centre
   
Riding for the disabled
Working with the Riding for the Disabled you will help tack up horses and lead them round with disabled riders on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Due to the nature of this role there will be training and the requirement for a CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) Check.
 
RDA group relies on dedicated/committed volunteers who can give regular attendance. Volunteers receive training in horse care, handling and assisting riders. It is rewarding and fun, benefiting the health of both riders and volunteers and enabling riders to develop skills and confidence.
The key to this role is the reliability of the volunteers, without them attending regularly rides may be cancelled and the riders miss out.
 
General Stable Helper
Working with the team at the riding centre at Lea Bridge Road you will help in the stables, mucking out, tacking up, grooming and other general stable duties.
Due to working with Horses these roles require prior experience with Horses.
Volunteers must have experience with horses to a minimum of Pony Club B Test or BHS Stage 1. Information on these qualifications can be found at www.pcuk.org and www.bhs.org.uk
A high level of patience is also required. Sturdy shoes NOT TRAINERS are essential. Also clothes that you don 't mind getting dirty. Waltham Forest College offers a NVQ Level 1 in Horse Care Studies which will compliment this position well. Email info@waltham.ac.uk
 
 
Farms and Domestic Animals
 
Hayes Hill Farm Volunteer
Working with farm staff and looking after domestic and farm animals. Duties can include feeding, cleaning out and general animal husbandry.
 
History and Heritage
 
Rye House Gatehouse Information Volunteer
We are looking for volunteers to help run the Rye House Gatehouse in Hoddesdon.
The Gatehouse is all that remains of Sir Andrew Ogard’s once extensive manor house. Built in 1443 the Gatehouse (now a Grade I listed building) still retains features of the manor’s splendid architecture and fine early English brickwork. It is considered to be one of the finest Medieval moated sites in Hertfordshire.
Richard Rumbold lived in the house in 1683 and it was he who helped to hatch the Rye House Plot, an unsuccessful conspiracy to assassinate King Charles II and his brother, the Duke of York.
Volunteers are needed to man the Gatehouse which is open on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays. From 11am to 5pm.
 
Sport 
 
Golf volunteering at Lee Valley Golf course.
Helping to repair and maintain the greens and fairways.
 
Golf volunteering at the Waterworks.
Checking tickets and assisting the golf development coach.
 
Tri Golf Activator
Help teach basic golf to children and young people at the Waterworks
 
Lee Valley Athletic Centre
General Assistant. Helping with a range of things from day to day running of the centre or helping on events.
 
Environmental Cleaning
   
Lee Valley Park Volunteer Litter Picking Association
This registered charity is a small group of dedicated people who help to clean up the Regional Park. They meet every second Monday of the month where they have a cup of tea and a chat before going out to target specific areas for litter picking. They provide litter pickers, sacks, and t shirts.

Research Projects
   
As well as volunteering for fun or through a desire to support the park some people are interested in carrying out research projects in specialist areas. These may be for a PHD or personal development but for what ever reason they can be very helpful in providing information for the Park. This helps us to understand if our management practices are working for the species we are trying to protect.
